What Your Car Battery Does

Your GMC or Cadillac has a car battery that stores an impressive amount of electricity. When you press the Engine Start button in your vehicle or turn the key in the ignition, the battery takes some of this electricity and sends it to the starter motor, which starts the engine. The battery also runs the electric components of your vehicle when the engine is turned off; it's because of the battery that you don't have to reset your clock every time you start your vehicle, for example. Beyond this, the battery does very little! The alternator generates electricity when the engine is running and recharges the battery.

When To Have Your Battery Replaced

As time goes by, your battery will be able to hold less and less electricity. This won't cause any real problems for a long time -- it has the electricity to spare! However, as the battery ages, it will have difficulty holding enough of a charge to send sufficient electricity to the starter. When this happens, you may notice that it takes several tries to start your vehicle; alternately, you may have to turn the key or hold the button longer than usual before the engine starts up.
