A little over 20 miles southeast of Columbus, the city of Carroll, OH is located almost in the geographic center of the state, in a strategic position to explore the different natural and urban wonders of the area. If you want to get away from the routine and see some new places, here are some great ideas for day trips you can visit with your friends or family without having to drive too far!
1. Columbus, OH
The state capital and most populous city in Ohio is undoubtedly the first destination that comes to mind for a day trip from Carroll. With more than two million inhabitants in its wider metropolitan area, Columbus offers hundreds of different touristic attractions, including museums, historical buildings, parks, and monuments. From downtown Carroll, the Ohio state capitol in the middle of the city is less than a half-hour drive away following Highway US-33 E.
Apart from the state capitol, some sights worth visiting in Columbus include the West Side neighborhood, the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, the Center of Science and Industry, and the Columbus Museum of Art. If you want to have a look at the city’s skyline, head down to the Main Street Bridge and walk along the Scioto Mile, a green area running along the Scioto River that makes the perfect place for an evening stroll.
2. Wayne National Forest, OH
The only national forest in the entire state of Ohio is less than an hour’s drive away from downtown Carroll and a popular destination for anyone wanting to get away from the city and enjoy a hike or walk in a natural environment. The Wayne National Forest was established in 1992, after which a project for its reforestation was started, and new recreational facilities were built to receive visitors from all over the state.
Currently, the Wayne National Forest spans over 240,000 acres of land, with two scenic byways, historical sights, and designated camping and lodging areas. Some of the most popular activities in the national forest include fishing, hunting, horse riding, and canoeing. If you’re into hiking, there are several designated trails that run across the forest and allow visitors to see the typical flora and fauna of the area, with wildflowers and different species of birds living in the area.
3. Buckeye Lake State Park
Located less than 20 miles away from downtown Carroll, the Buckeye Lake State Park is another beautiful destination for anyone wanting to spend some time in nature and take a refreshing dip in a freshwater lake. Considered the oldest state park in the state, it covers more than 3,000 acres of territory and has several islands and public beaches that make it a popular destination among day-trippers from Columbus and the surrounding areas.
