Ignition coil | Performance GMC Cadillac near Lancaster, OHIgnition coils are mini transformers that convert low-voltage current to high voltage. An ignition coil is connected to each of your spark plugs, and they transform the 12 volts produced by the plugs into 30,000m volts to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder and produce combustion. As your reliable GMC dealer, we’d like you to know some signs that you have a faulty ignition coil.

Signs You Need to Have a Faulty Ignition Coil Replaced by Your GMC Dealer

Check Engine Light

An illuminated check engine light is always a sign of trouble. This light connects to your computer, and it lights up if a problem is identified in your engine. Your Caddy has a wide range of sensors that connect to every important component. These sensors continually supply information to your car’s computer. If a particular sensor detects a problem, it informs your computer, and the check engine light comes on.
A worn or damaged ignition coil can trigger this light, as sensors attached to the coil will notice that it can’t sufficiently increase the power produced by its attached plug. The sensors will usually pinpoint this problem before the coil becomes weak enough to generate a misfire in the cylinder. We’ll connect your computer to our diagnostic system to identify the exact problem and then fix it.

Misfiring

A misfire occurs when the spark plugs don’t correctly ignite the contents of the cylinder. Air and fuel mix in the intake manifold, and once they reach a ratio of 14:1 air to fuel, the mixture is drawn into the cylinders. This mixture is compressed by the upward movement of the piston and then ignited by the spark plug.
A worn ignition coil might not produce a sufficient charge to ignite the cylinder’s contents. if this happens, the cylinder will misfire. You’ll experience a jerking feeling when a cylinder misfires, and you may hear a sound from the engine. Regular misfiring can damage your cylinders, pistons, and catalytic converter. We’ll trace the cause of the problem and repair it.

Starting Problems

When you push the start button, the battery sends an electrical charge to the starter motor. The starter motor cranks your engine, and fuel and air will mix and be drawn into the cylinders. A damaged ignition coil can cause starting problems if it can’t provide sufficient power to its spark plug to ignite the cylinder’s contents. This is known as a hard start.
Starting problems can also be caused by a weak battery, a damaged starter motor, a weak alternator, or fuse problems. Our technicians will need to check your engine to determine the cause of the problem.
